It’s important to note that in order to successfully teach reading comprehension, comprehension strategies should be both defined and taught to students(Winch&Holliday,2010b). Comprehension of text is the aim of reading. Good readers should be able to decode words, however, this and of itself is not enough (Winch&Holliday,2010b). The meaning of reading comprehension is to understand written text(Winch&Holliday,2010b). USING VISUAL AIDS AS AUTHENTIC MATERIAL IN ESL CLASSROOMS. I chose this exercise because it will help students associate meaning with form. Students will be asked to work on an exercise where they are required to fill in the blanks with the correct form of the verb in the simple past tense. I chose to design an activity where students can test their understanding of the new forms without necessarily memorizing structure. The first activity mainly focuses on form. In my presentation, I incorporated specific examples in order to reinforce the learning process.Īfter the students have now had the target language presented to them clearly, the next step will be to distribute to them the handout with the exercises. Then it is my turn to overtly explain the rule by using the PowerPoint Presentation that I prepared. The purpose of this is to initiate discussion and to draw their attention on a specific form. I wanted to use the deductive approach in order to teach the tense and after discussing it with my mentor she encouraged me to do so. In the Opening/Warm up stage of the lesson, the teacher welcomes the students in the class and he explains how the lesson is going to be carried out. The whole lesson will be based on the PPP framework. The focus of this lesson is mainly on the form and structure of the Simple Past tense. Through this lesson, the students will familiarize themselves with the Simple Past tense in order to use it orally and in written language. The lesson plan had been designed for Elementary level (A2) 6 th Grade Elementary School Class of 25 students (11-12 years old).
